Blog Assignment #3

In my post I will be able to share with you a section out of my Professional Memo. The type of scenario that I am addressing  is the suggestion of my traffic barrier to help cause less accidents.

"A second way to slow down drivers to reduce the damage during accidents is to provide a road split blockage (Traffic Barrier) to where the yellow lanes are located in the middle. The type of traffic barriers that can be used in the middle of the street is a steel type one and look very similar to guardrails.  Since the road is a two way street, there is more of a chance that cars will crash into each other by  steering the wrong direction. These road blockage can help society because instead of having other cars causing huge accidents by hitting other cars on opposite lanes and causing severe damage and injuries, the traffic barrier will only have the driver get hurt instead of a lot of causalities." (Angel, Memo#1)

I chose this scenario because I believe that helping out LaGuardia Campus would improve people's safety, making them not feel as scared. This section was chosen because I believe talking about this part will greatly reduce the amount of traffic accidents that happen around the campus. The company hires workers to place the steel traffic barriers in the middle of the road on Thompson Ave which will take a day to finish the whole road. What inspired me to think of this idea is the fact that there are so many other places that have steel traffic barriers in the middle lanes which really help reduce accidents. Ex: Highways. What I learn from this memo assignment is that there are so many ways to help prevent traffic problems from even becoming a problem itself. I researched 10 different ways of slowing down drivers and 10 different way to help prevent traffic damage which helped me write more. What I learned about technical writing in a professional memo is that I had to make it look like I was sending something life changing to the company, something worth changing. I had to break paragraphs into separate categories and give more of my opinions and real life facts, rather than writing for fiction based books.

Blog Assignment #2

On http://theconstructor.org/ , this blog explains how to repair/build things around us such as buildings, streets, bridges and more. An example is a proper method of concrete placement. This concrete placement consists of a lot of planning such as equipment, layout and proposed procedures. As the blog states "Post concrete inspection of concrete is essential to check for any damage or defects that may require repair" (Constructor,2012). Basically what this means is that after placing the concrete, workers need to test it out  in case there won't be no cracks and harm when civilians walk on it, they want it to be as smooth as possible. Workers test out concrete damage by using mini test cars to have them drive on it. If the car bumps or gets stuck on cracks, workers quickly brake/remove it or add more to it. Another statement that the blog says is " In case cube tests give unsatisfactory results the conclusive tests such as ultrasonic pulse test, core test etc. to prove the suitability of concrete. The position of the author is to help other civil engineers focus, learn, and build better for their own projects, not only necessarily based on concrete, but many other  different types of projects, objects and more. This blog is pretty professional because it is broken down into many categories to help find what to take about. I believe that this author spends time blogging because he/she believes that the world will be benefitted a lot better if people were able to share ideas with each other, sort of a way of thinking outside the box instead of viewing only your own ways. What will benefit me from reading these engineering blogs is that in the future, when I do become a Civil Engineer, I might need ideas to help build bigger projects. Sure, having a team is all great but allowing us to think even further outside the box, we must test other ideas and fuse them into our own projects. These engineering blog posts will also benefit me through my educational plans by allowing me to understand more of what happens inside the civil engineering field, making me feel prepared to what I'll be doing and also helping me with my management (Time, Planning, etc.)

Welcome Post

Welcome everyone to my post. My name is Angel Serrano  I am a highly motivated, outgoing, positive, caring person and I go to LaGuardia Community College where my major is Civil Engineering. My educational plan is to finish college in 8 years and obtain a ph. D in Civil Engineering. My first two years will be in Laguardia, the next four will be in City College of New York where I will be getting my Masters Degree and the last two-three years will be at Columbia University in New York finishing off my college career. I'm actually also considering minoring in Math. Now my Career plans after college is a little questionable, reasons why is because I've haven't searched firms or companies that I could work for as a civil engineer. I don't plan to look into these until I've made it to City College. For my career, I have a dream of building my own bridge and to make things even bigger, I want to build a bridge that connects lower Manhattan towards Staten Island. Technology today is used a lot more than it was 20 years ago. My relationship with technology is pretty strong. I use it everyday, almost the whole day with my phone, computer, t.v., etc. I use my technology mostly for communication finding information about what is going around in the world and researching necessary/unnecessary topics and ideas sort of like a hobby. What I am most interested in College is my math classes which are Calculus one through three, Differential in Equations and Linear Algebra. I have a sense of passion for math because I love having that feeling of being able to solve difficult equations that I would think I would never solve or finding out new methods to solve equations easier. Math may be perplex, but giving it time and effort is what counts to be really outstanding and accomplished. I believe people in Laguardia do have the same relationship to technology as I do but everyone does it in many different ways. People use apps now to help them obtain information, socially communicate, etc. Apps on phone have hit really huge in today's society.I believe that reading is much more useful, well for me, because I learn a lot from reading different types of articles, books and websites. I do not write regularly with a pen but I do most of my writing on my Iphone on the notes section or on the computer and what I write about is information that is useful for me to be used later on.
